The problem with being 88 years old is you become very hard to buy for. 88 yr olds don't need much. She generally ends up being given soap and jewellery. People being unsure if she wears earrings tend go for necklaces. My grandma likes jewellery and wears it often, she just needs help. If no one is around she can't put anything on or take anything off. Now a days it's too difficult.
We tried everything to remedy this problem: twisty/screw on clasps, round clasps, super extra big geriatric clips. Long necklaces that loop over the head - no need to unclip - don't work because she finds it difficult to lift her arms that high.
There are many necklaces she'd like to wear. Quite often we'd go out to dinner or a birthday party and grandma would ask for help putting on a necklace. This was no problem, it takes 30 seconds tops, but at the end of the night we'd say goodnight and leave. The necklace forgotten. Grandma would be stuck wearing it until the next time she saw us. That could be up to a week.
I made some jewellery adapters. They don't solve the problem entirely she still needs hep adding the adapter to a piece of jewellery but once it's on she can put on and remove that piece at her leisure.
Of course, you can just add one of these to a necklace in place of a clasp but, personally, I like to make removable adapters.
Its likely that your dexterity challenged family member will receive an ordinary necklace as a gift and they'll probably want to wear it. An adapter can quickly be added so they can do that.
Clip the adapter to the necklace.
Take the clasp from the adapter and clip it to the ring on the necklace.
Take the clasp on the necklace and clip to the ring on the adapter.
The magnets are light and easy to pull apart but are still strong enough to securely keep jewellery in place.
These are an amazing addition to bracelets.
