It is getting far too dark in the evenings these days. Winter is sweeping in. A small thunder storm rolled in while I was writing this.
Though winter is on its way it is not here yet, must have taken a detour somewhere. The light is disappearing rapidly but temperatures haven't dropped too far yet. El Nino is setting in and there is already talk its going to be an Indian winter. But I still hope there's snow, just a little.
While I wait for winters powdery downfall I thought I'd craft some cosy winter mittens before the frost sets in and steals away all motivation to move.
Here are some pretty and warm embroidered mittens.
Owlet Mittens anyone??
YOU Will Need
Pattern
You can either use the patterns provided above or make your own using THIS pattern.
Fabric
Cut 2 of each pattern piece out of mitten fabric. Add a seem allowance, I usually use a seem allowance of 1cm.
If you want to you can line your mittens. If so, cut 2 of lining fabric as well.
Owlets
To help prevent the owlets from fraying iron some lightweight interfacing to the back of each owlet piece.
This will help to center and place the wing and eye pieces.
When I made my owlets I used a number of different embroidery stitches. Blanket stitch, cross stitch, knots, chain stitch, long stitch.
Sewing
Do the same to lining (if adding a lining)
Do the same to lining (if adding a lining)
The mittens I made for this tutorial didn't have elastic or lining but I've written in alternative finishing below.
If adding a lining trim up sewn edges. keep outer mittens as is, turn lining mittens so good sides face out and place inside outer mittens (good sides of outer mittens face good side of lining mittens) Sew lining and outer mittens together - leave an opening so the attached mittens can be turned through. Sew up opening once turned through. |
If adding both elastic and a lining. Follow instructions above for adding a lining. Once lining is sewn into mittens and mittens have been turned through create a casing by sewing a line around mittens that fits width of elastic. There should still be an opening at the end of mittens, thread elastic through this and sew opening up. |
