The waters that surround the isle of engagement gifts is decidedly murky. Its a place where nobody can agree upon correct and polite etiquette. Is an enegament gift even necessary? some say yes! absolutely, others say no! not at all. I was even told that you are only expected to provide a gift if the couple in question have not paid for the enegagement party, i.e. the guests must pay for/provide their own food and drink. I was told that engagements are mandatory unless the couple expressly forbid them. Everyone has a diffent opinion on the matter. You could, of course, just ask the happy couple in question, but being modest we things they are likely to tell you that they don't expect a gift. We all know that's a cop out answer and has no real bearing on your ultimate decision. The question is: Is anyone else bring a gift? Nobody wants to be that person that neglects to provide a gift, whilst everyone else has.
I prefer to air on the side of caution and provide a small inexpensive gift, less chance of offending anyone that way.
If you are looking for a gift its best keep the couple you are shopping for in mind. Some may like a funny/joke gift, others might not. Some couples, especially those who indicate they don't want a gift, might prefer a roundabout gift, like a donation made in their name to a charity.
Below is my 'They're Lobsters!' gift I made for friends that is inspired by Friends (the TV show)
I hope they fun and enjoyable little gift. They're Lobsters!!!
