Glass Art Mug
Her birthday was coming up and of course I wanted to make something to celebrate the occasion. I have been making a lot of decorative candles for people lately but I wanted to do something different this time round, there are only so many candles a girl can melt before she goes mad!
Raiding the craft for new products to try is probably my favourite hobby. I browse the entire store head to toe, even if the only thing I want to buy is paperclips I still search head to toe.
The local (and very nearly the only) craft store where I live doubles as a general house decorating and craft store with duvets, bakeware, bathroom products, curtains and fabrics housed downstairs, and other craft products upstairs.
Down in the bakeware section I found some wonderfully shaped glass mugs.
I thought they were very elegant and would fit my friend perfectly.
They were the sort of shape that could be used for anything from iced chocolate to lager.
Aiming for a gift with a practical use I raced upstairs and grabbed some heat set glass paint.
The Plan - Write a Sherlock quote on the glass.
I have never used glass paint before this is a bit of an experiment.
You wILL nEED:
Glass paint - I used Pebe Vitrea 160
A glass cup/mug
A pencil
Pen and paper
Method
One
- I rejigged one of Sherlock's texts.
Two
Using a sharpened pencil dipped in the glass paint and wrote out the quote.
The directions said to leave to dry for 24 hours, then bake for 40 minutes at 160*c so that's what I did.
The paint surprised me, before it was baked the dried paint was tacky and easily scratched but after it was hard and glossy.
I gave it a hand wash and a turn through the dishwasher, the paint stayed on fine. It is definitely something I will using again in the future.
Before I gifted it to my friend I wrote a little 'Dishwasher Friendly' note.
