It is Christmas time!! And this blog is sorely in need of some Christmas crafts.
I made my dog a baby reindeer costume for christmas. He's the right colour for a reindeer, brown and white, plus hes super cute. I made it out of a single layer of cotton so he doesn't get too hot wearing it, because its Summer here and the temperatures are rising.
I Used . . .
- White fabric paint
- Fake fur
- Felt
- Embroidery thread
- Fabric glue
The Body
I painted white dots right in the center. The dot get smaller and smaller as they travel outwards.
I cut out a collar of fake fur and tacked it to the neck of the costume.
To finish it all off I sewed binding around the edges. And added velcro to the neck and body straps.
The Antlers
I made the antlers by repurposing cheap store bought antlers, that always go on sale at christmas time. I find these are actually cheaper than buying ordinary headbands, weird.
The basic frame inside has a normal plastic headband that has two plastic rods fused to it.
If you want to make the antlers for yourself skip this bit.
I glued the felt onto the leftover brown cotton. I used fabric glue for this. The trick to glueing with fabric glue, or PVA is to spread it on the felt then let it dry just a little (until its just tacky) before placing the felt onto to the cotton. This way the glue shouldn't seep through the fabric.
I corresponded the colour of embroidery thread with the colour of felt used.
Glue down the side that has the fur pointing away from the cut edge first.
*TIP* For cutting fur - I use a craft knife or xacto knife to cut the fur. Just kind of score away at the finishing on the back. That way you shouldn't cut through any of the fur fibres, they'll stay nice and long and won't look hacked.
This Reindeer is ready to go to Santa school.
